TPU inner tube, in a few words
What it is for
TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) tubes replace conventional butyl tubes and weigh three to four times less: 50 g for road versus 100 to 120 g for an ordinary tube. On a pair of wheels, that is over a hundred grams saved, at the rim — the place where weight costs most in acceleration.
What you need to know
TPU is more elastic and more puncture-resistant than butyl, but it is repaired differently: standard patches do not stick, you need patches made for it. It holds pressure better than latex, less well than butyl: a check before every ride remains the right habit.
