Fitting a Tufo tubeless ready tyre

Airtight rim tape, valve, Tufo sealant, tank pump: the order of operations, the quantities, and what to know about hookless rims.

What is compatible

All Tufo TR tyres — Comtura 4, 5 and Prima, Prima TT, Endurance 7 TR, the three gravel tyres and the XC TR SG — fit on tubeless rims with or without hooks (hookless). On a hookless rim, respect the rim's maximum pressure, which is often lower than the tyre's: it is the rim that rules.

They also fit with an inner tube, if you are not ready to go tubeless: that is the meaning of “tubeless ready”.

The rim

The rim bed must be airtight: tubeless tape laid flat, on a clean, dry rim, with one and a half turns of overlap at the valve. Take the width that covers the rim bed from one flank to the other — 25 mm for most road and gravel rims, 30 mm for wide ones. Pierce the valve hole with a hot iron or a point, never with a cutter, and screw in the valve with its seal on the inside.

Fitting

  1. Fit the tyre dry, finishing at the area opposite the valve, and seating the beads in the bottom of the rim bed to give yourself slack. Check the direction of rotation on gravel and MTB tyres: the arrow is moulded on the sidewall.
  2. Pop the beads with a tank pump — the Tufo pump has one — or a compressor, without sealant first. Both beads must climb onto their shoulders: you hear two pops and the moulded line above the bead becomes even all the way round.
  3. Deflate, remove the core with the supplied key, and inject Tufo sealant through the valve: 40 to 50 ml for a road tyre, 60 to 80 ml for gravel, 90 to 120 ml for MTB. A 50 ml bottle is one road wheel.
  4. Refit the core, inflate, then spin and shake the wheel in every direction to spread the liquid, and ride a few kilometres straight away.

Tufo Tubeless Ready sealant is designed for the inner rubbers of the brand's TR tyres. It plugs punctures as you ride; renew it every three to four months, more often in summer.

Pressure

Tubeless is ridden lower than a tubed tyre, since it cannot pinch. The ranges are on each product page; in practice, a 28 mm Comtura runs between 4 and 5 bar for 75 kg, a 40 mm gravel tyre around 2.5 to 3 bar, a 2.35 XC around 1.5 to 1.8 bar. Stay within the range on the product page and within the rim's.

Repairing

A puncture that does not seal by itself is dealt with without removal: a plug from the Elite TR kit, or the Carbon repair liquid injected through the valve for a hole up to 6 mm. Beyond that, it is the spare tube, and the tyre goes back to the workshop.
