What it is for
When sealant is no longer enough — a cut that is too wide, a flint hole — the plug kit is what lets you get home without removing the tyre. 23 g, in aluminium: it fits in a jersey pocket.
What it contains
A cleaning and reaming tool, which prepares and evens out the hole; an insertion tool, which pushes in the plug; and ten black adhesive plugs. The principle is that of car-tyre repair, transposed to the bike.
How to use it
Locate the hole, ream it with one in-and-out pass, load a plug into the insertion tool, push it in two thirds of the way, withdraw the tool with a sharp pull and trim the excess flush. The sealant already in the tyre finishes sealing around the plug. Re-inflate and go — a repair of this kind generally lasts until the tyre is worn out.
